First, and short, article on our research looking at Indigenous experiences of evacuations.
Long story short, Indigenous engagement and - where relevant - control and leadership during an evacuation is vital to ensure the safety of Indigenous families. Too often, families are separated and (re)traumatised during an evacuation. With wildfires and flooding predicted to increase in frequency and intensity, empowering Indigenous communities to control their own evacuations is a necessary first step in ensuring an effective, efficient and just evacuation.
